Is it recommended to leave a note in a lost wallet asking for it to be returned?

Why not? I have a popup message whenever my mobile is turned on, asking it be returned to me & please call xxx-xxx-xxxx (my wife’s number) & my name.
In a wallet is reasonable, too — decent people will automatically do what is reasonably possible to return it. It can only speed this up if you have a card up front that gives your name & phone number & requests they please call to return it. You can mention you match your photo ID so they can identify you upon meeting in a public place. Mention a reward, if you like, but that can backfire, if the amount isn’t as high as the person wants, or can get for selling your identity.
